Current Projects
The Planning Committee, made up of the
residents of Lealman and representatives of the County Planning
and
Community Development Deptartments, have been assessing the Lealman area for over a
year. This resulted in a formal presentation to the Board of County
Commissioners, Aug 2001. The BOCC unanimously approved the report which
designates us a Revitalization Area.
The Revitalization Area designation
allows the Planning Dept to seek grants and the Community Development Dept to
seek HUD money for the projects contained in the Report. Money for these
projects will not be available until 2003.
In order to gather the
information for applying for grants the Planning Committee, made up of
volunteers of the community, surveyed each property in Central Lealman and the
resulting document was presented to the Board Of County Commissioners for
approval. It was unanimously approved by the BOCC.
The Lealman Community Association
has committed to accomplishing 4 short term community projects:
1. Street Lights
2. Lower trash collection costs - see (Extreme
Clean up)
3. Develop the Joes Creek Property as a green space
4. Remove derelict cars from the community.
The street light drive, under the leadership of Tony Clark is almost
complete.
The negotiations with the trash haulers did not prove to be fruitful. We turned
to the Board of County Commissioners for assistance. They referred it to the
County Solid Waste Dept to expedite a contract to lower prices. As yet we have
had not seen any results. We will continue pusuing this project because it hits
every family in Lealman financially.
The Joes Creek property, pictured
below, is now under consideration to be developed as a County Community Park. We
have urged that this be done at the earliest possible date.
We believe the County leadership is in agreement, in principal, for this project
to go forward.

The Sheriff's Dept in a coordinated effort
with the Code Enforcement Dept has been marginally effective in getting derilect
cars removed. This will be an on going effort and we must continually affirm our
comittment to get our
community cleaned up. This is an effort that has to come from both the county and the
residence of Lealman.
The LCA recently added one other project.
The
Neighborhood Crime Watch Program.
We have a crime problem and it will take
all of us to work together to correct it. The Sheriff's Dept. has committed an
officer to establish Crime Watch Groups throughout Lealman. This is a passive
endeavor. All it requires is that you pay attention to what is happening in your
Neighborhood and report suspicious behavior via the system.
